Selected first overall in the 1983 NFL Draft, Elway changed the course of Broncos history after being traded from the Baltimore Colts. His rare mix of arm strength, mobility, and leadership made him one of the most complete quarterbacks of all time.
2× Super Bowl Champion (XXXII, XXXIII)
Super Bowl XXXIII MVP
9× Pro Bowler
1987 NFL MVP
5× AFC Champion
1992 Walter Payton Man of the Year
2004 Pro Football Hall of Fame Inductee
Elway retired in 1999 with 51,475 passing yards, 300 touchdowns, and more comeback wins than any quarterback of his era.
Few quarterbacks in NFL history could match Elway’s ability to turn impossible situations into unforgettable victories. His mix of poise, improvisation, and competitive fire made him the ultimate closer — a trait that became his trademark throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
By the time he retired, Elway ranked among the all-time leaders in fourth-quarter comebacks and game-winning drives, with 47 official comeback victories (according to Pro Football Reference).
Some of the most memorable:
“The Drive” (1986 AFC Championship vs. Browns) — 98 yards, 5:32 left, hostile crowd, and freezing weather. Elway methodically picked apart Cleveland’s defense, tying the game with a bullet to Mark Jackson. Denver won in overtime, cementing “The Drive” as one of the greatest moments in NFL history.
1988 vs. Seahawks — Down 21–0, Elway led Denver to 24 unanswered points, including a late fourth-quarter touchdown. His leadership kept teammates believing even when victory looked impossible.
1992 vs. Chiefs — With just 1:54 left, Elway orchestrated a 75-yard drive, completing four passes in a row and scoring the winning touchdown with 38 seconds remaining.
Super Bowl XXXII (1998) — Though not a traditional “comeback,” Elway’s helicopter run on third down in the second half embodied his never-quit mentality and turned the tide against the heavily favored Green Bay Packers.
Elway thrived under pressure — it was where he was most comfortable. Broncos fans knew that if No. 7 had the ball in his hands in the fourth quarter, the game wasn’t over.
Elway’s comebacks weren’t about statistics — they were about belief. He inspired teammates, elevated his franchise, and redefined what clutch performance meant in football.
Super Bowl XXXII (1998) — Finally silencing critics, Elway captured his first Lombardi Trophy, leading Denver to a 31–24 victory.
Super Bowl XXXIII (1999) — Capping his career with Super Bowl MVP honors, Elway went out on top, finishing a storybook journey few athletes ever achieve.
After retiring, Elway continued shaping Denver’s football destiny — serving as General Manager and helping deliver another championship in Super Bowl 50. His leadership legacy lives on in every generation of Broncos fans.
